The new KNMI app: better prepared for severe weather

KNMI aims to warn people earlier and more accurately, as extreme weather is becoming more frequent due to climate change. With the new KNMI app, citizens can stay informed and prepared for dangerous weather conditions. We worked closely with KNMI and Koos Service Design to create this app.

Helping everyone prepare for extreme weather

Due to climate change, weather extremes are becoming increasingly frequent. KNMI wanted to warn citizens faster and more specifically through a new app that is accessible, user-friendly, and sustainable. The challenge: designing a solution that is both technically innovative and socially relevant.

Design & development

Optimum of knowledge, design and technology in a sustainable app

Three parties joined forces to develop the app: KNMI with their specialist expertise, Koos Service Design focused on UX and design, and we delivered the technical foundation. Our collaboration resulted in a reliable and data-driven weather app that combines KNMI’s live measurement data with user-generated reports.

When weather warnings are issued, such as code yellow, orange, or red, users receive real-time alerts and safety advice. Users can also receive notifications about earthquakes in the Netherlands, with the measurements displayed in the app.

The app's accessibility received significant attention, with consideration for a broad target audience and various limitations. It was also built with sustainability in mind: developed according to Green Software Foundation principles, the app minimizes CPU and battery use, reducing its carbon footprint. On top of that it’s completely ad-free, and the source code is publicly available, allowing anyone to suggest improvements.

Conclusie

A valuable contribution to KNMI’s core task

The launch of the new KNMI app supports KNMI’s core task: working day and night to ensure a safe and livable Netherlands by providing society with independent knowledge, advice, and warnings about risks related to weather, climate, and seismology. The new app is expected to reach more people, provide better information and better prepare them for weather conditions, thus reducing the impact of extreme weather.

Maintaining an aircraft engine with AI

Did you know that a single aircraft engine contains around 4,800 precision bolts? Each of these bolts requires regular maintenance to ensure flight safety. KLM Engineering & Maintenance is responsible for this process. In collaboration with DZB Leiden, the bolts are washed, inspected, and resorted. But how do you sort 4,800 bolts quickly, accurately, and efficiently? That’s where Dawn Technology came in.
