One national view, enriched with regional news

Follow the news in your region

NOS and the thirteen regional broadcasters in the Netherlands have worked together for years. Dawn Technology contributed to the next step in this collaboration by building Region Exchange, a platform feature that seamlessly connects national and regional news across apps and websites.

National and regional news in one experience

The collaboration between NOS and the regional broadcasters had already proven its value on radio, television and online. Regional news blocks had found their way to NOS broadcasts, the NOS website and the NOS app. Still, news consumption remained fragmented across platforms.

The ambition for the next phase was clear. Users of regional broadcaster apps and websites needed instant access to major national news from NOS. At the same time, NOS users had to be able to easily follow news from one or more regions of their choice. The challenge was purely technical: each broadcaster operates on its own CMS and infrastructure, often built with completely different technologies. A solution was required that could integrate all of these systems without disrupting editorial workflows or user experience.

Design & Development

One exchange layer across many different systems

Dawn Technology developed the technology behind this new functionality under the name Region Exchange. This exchange layer enables automated two-way distribution of news items between the platforms of NOS and the regional broadcasters.

When users open the website or app of a regional broadcaster for the first time, they are asked via a pop-up whether they want to include national NOS news in their feed. Once activated, the most important national news items appear directly within the regional platform, clearly marked with the NOS logo.

The same mechanism works in reverse. On the NOS website and in the NOS app, users are invited to select one or two regional broadcasters whose news they would like to follow. These regional items are then displayed within the NOS environment, enriched with clear source identification. Users remain fully in control and can change their regional selection at any time.

Behind the scenes, Region Exchange connects a complex landscape of diverse systems into one reliable exchange layer. Despite the technical diversity of the broadcasters, news items are transferred in real time, without delay and without manual intervention.

Conclusie

One connected news landscape for the user

Region Exchange strengthened a long-standing collaboration between NOS and the regional broadcasters and turned it into a fully integrated digital experience. National and regional news now flow seamlessly between platforms, without users having to switch sources.

The result is a connected news ecosystem in which users gain faster, broader and more relevant access to what matters locally, nationally and internationally. It demonstrates how smart integration can directly improve the public information experience at scale.
