SURF wanted to explore secure, passwordless authentication via smartphones. Dawn Technology developed TIQR: an open-source login solution that enables users to access websites quickly and safely using QR-code authentication.
Traditional login methods rely heavily on passwords, creating security risks and friction for users. For organisations in education and research, secure access to digital environments is essential, without slowing people down.
SURF was looking for a modern authentication solution that combined strong security standards with a fast, intuitive user experience, while remaining flexible and open for wider adoption.
We developed TIQR as an open-source authentication solution based on established security standards. Users log in by scanning a QR code displayed on a website with the TIQR app on their smartphone. After entering a personal PIN, authentication is completed within milliseconds, no passwords required.
TIQR is built on the authentication standards of the Open Authentication Initiative (OATH) and uses the OCRA protocol for challenge-response authentication. All authentication happens on the smartphone, secured with 256-bit AES encryption. The solution is designed to meet the highest security requirements and is subject to independent security audits.
TIQR proves that strong security and ease of use can go hand in hand. By removing passwords and relying on trusted authentication standards, TIQR delivers fast, secure access for users while reducing security risks for organisations. Working closely with Icetubs and their users, we translated the physical cold-water experience into a seamless digital one.
