Turning a TV quiz into a second-screen experience

BankGiro Miljonairs is built on suspense, speed and decision-making under pressure. Viewers at home often think the answers are easy, but the real question is how they perform when the clock is ticking and a virtual million euros are at stake.

RTL wanted spectators to feel that same tension through an interactive second-screen experience. The app needed to replicate the full game flow with fifteen questions, four answer options and three classic lifelines. At the same time, the release date of the first televised episode was already fixed. That meant the entire app had to be designed, built and launched under extreme time pressure, without compromising on stability, usability or visual quality.

Design & Development

The BankGiro Miljonairs app was built using Unity, allowing a single codebase to run seamlessly on both iOS and Android. This approach guaranteed perfect consistency across platforms while significantly accelerating development.

Although Unity is traditionally used for 2D and 3D games, we designed a clean and intuitive user interface combined with visually rich elements that reinforce the intensity of the quiz. The app guides users through the full question flow, including all three lifelines, creating a realistic game experience that mirrors the television format.

Building a stable, high-quality app within such a short timeframe required sharp technical focus and close alignment between design and development. Every element was optimised to ensure smooth performance, instant feedback on answers and an immersive user experience from the very first launch.

With the BankGiro Miljonairs app, RTL successfully transformed a classic television quiz into an engaging second-screen experience. Viewers can now test their knowledge under real game conditions and experience the same tension as the contestants on screen.

The result is a visually rich, stable and accessible quiz app that brings millions of viewers even closer to the show. It proves how interactive storytelling and solid game technology can amplify the impact of entertainment beyond the television broadcast.
