With 28 theatres, Pathé is the leading cinema chain in the Netherlands. Dawn Technology supports Pathé in modernising its reservation process with a powerful mobile app for iOS and Android, bringing the full cinema experience into one digital platform.
Pathé wanted to offer its visitors one central place for everything related to their cinema experience. From discovering new movies to selecting seats and managing tickets, the entire journey needed to become faster, smarter and fully digital.
The ambition matched Pathé’s innovative character as a cinema brand. With technologies such as IMAX, Dolby Cinema and Pathé Relax Seats, the digital experience could not fall behind. The app had to handle massive traffic peaks during blockbuster releases, integrate seamlessly with internal cinema systems and provide a frictionless booking flow for millions of users. At the same time, Pathé wanted to explore new interaction models, including voice control through Google Assistant.
Dawn Technology developed the Pathé Cinemas app as a full-featured all-in-one platform. Users can browse the complete national movie schedule, select their preferred cinema, reserve seats and purchase tickets in just a few steps. Tickets are always available digitally, directly inside the app.
To guarantee stability during high-demand releases, we implemented a smart virtual waiting room. When traffic peaks occur, users enter a controlled queue instead of overloading the system. This prevents crashes and ensures fair and reliable ticket distribution, even during the most anticipated premieres.
The app was integrated with multiple internal Pathé systems to enable real-time availability, reservations and transaction processing. For payments, Apple Pay was added to the iOS app to provide fast, secure and frictionless checkout.
A unique extension of the app is the integration with Google Assistant. Users can access Pathé information through their smartphone, smartwatch, soundbar, speaker or Google Home device using voice commands. A specific technical challenge was teaching Google to correctly recognise the pronunciation of “Pathé”. This was solved in close collaboration with Google to ensure natural and reliable interaction.
The Pathé Cinemas app has become a central touchpoint in the cinema experience. Visitors discover movies, reserve seats and manage tickets through one stable, scalable platform. The solution supports Pathé’s innovative ambitions and performs reliably during extreme traffic peaks.
The app continues to evolve through ongoing development. New features, including advanced voice-based ticket purchasing and continuous UX optimisation based on user feedback, ensure that the platform remains future-proof. It proves how digital innovation and entertainment come together in one seamless experience.
