Keeping soil drilling samples safe with a smart app

Large infrastructure and energy projects rely on detailed knowledge of soil conditions. TNO stores decades of soil drilling samples, each analysed and archived for future research. These samples are physically stored in dense wooden containers, stacked in racks.
The challenge was clear: enable staff to quickly add and update sample data, despite limited WiFi and VPN connectivity caused by the physical properties of the stored materials.
We created a mobile app designed to function reliably in low-connectivity environments. Each soil drilling sample is identified by a unique barcode and scanned using a Bluetooth-based infrared scanner, which was seamlessly integrated into the app.
To overcome unreliable network coverage, smart synchronisation mechanisms were implemented. These ensure data is safely stored locally and synchronised with the central database once a connection becomes available. The app was designed to be intuitive and efficient, following Google’s Material Design guidelines. Users have clear insight into buffer status, synchronisation progress and scan task updates at all times.
The app enables TNO employees to register and manage soil drilling samples quickly and reliably, regardless of connectivity constraints. By combining robust offline functionality with a clear interface, the solution protects valuable research data while making daily workflows more efficient and frustration-free.
Anexo helps organizations manage complex processes and data. From contract management to the execution of technical measurement assignments: accuracy and reliability are key. To support further growth, Anexo asked Dawn Technology to help digitize their mutation data, scheduling, and contract analysis. The goal: save time, improve quality, and achieve scalability without compromising on security or human touch.
We build robust digital solutions for complex, real-world environments.
